A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR KIDS

When we talk about the environment our thoughts are of air pollution, global warming,
destruction of rainforests and endangered wildlife species. Our governments, together
with the NGO’s are constantly aware of these problems and are address them, however
it is an on going problem that requires continuous attention.

Diesel smoke, exhausts from burning automobile fuels, industries, and homes are the
major source of air pollution. As a result of this there are many harmful gases being
release in to the environment. These are known as Greenhouse gases. The main greenhouse
gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous and methane oxide. These gases naturally occur in
our atmosphere, however the levels are increasing and thus having a negative impact on our environment.

Plants need CO2 for Photosynthesis (the mechanisms plant need to grow), however trees are continually being cut
down for our development and when you combine this with the extra pollution we are adding to the atmosphere, the
result is a considerable increase in CO2 gases and less plant life to re-address the balance. In light of this, we can all
do our little bit to help the environment; we can plant trees around our houses or potted plants inside. There are many
ways in which we can improve our environment, and if every one of us contributed in a small way, it will make a big    difference.

Nowadays people are a lot more aware of environmental issues, and an increased awareness amongst the younger    generation is becoming evident. However, there are still many ways in which we can educate our children about their    environment.

Here are some simple habits we can encourage our children to adopt from an early age :

            * Don't leave the refrigerator door open. Close the door immediately after use.

            * Always turn the TV off when you're finished watching it.

            * If there is nobody in the room, turn off the lights.

            * Turn off the water tap properly after you have finished. Don't leave the tap running while you brush
               your teeth.

           * Use a sponge or cloth instead of a paper towel to clean up the messes.

           * Collect all magazines, newspapers, cans, glasses and bottles and take them to the nearest
              recycle center.

Recycling is the term use when waste materials are collected, sorted and reprocessed, turning them back into
usable raw materials. By recycling we help to conserve natural resources, reduce litter and save landfill space.
Next time you take a trip to a recycling center take your child along too, explain to them what is happening and
why. It’s never too early to start. Remember, just because you throw something into the dustbin, it doesn’t mean
that it’s gone away; you’ve just moved it to another location. Put it to good use, and recycle it instead.
