In the 5th episode of NUFamili, we will discuss the many ways
to teach children to be independent, by doing their daily chores.
The common problems that working parents face these days, is
how to ensure that their children do their daily chores while they
are away at work. In this episode, we follow advice from Puan
Safiyyah Aziz, an expert in Health Psychology. According to Puan
Safiyyah, the best way to get children used to being independent
with their daily chores is by setting a routine for them. By following
routines, children will get used to their schedule, when to eat,
bathe, play and etc. According to Puan Safiyyah, teaching children
to be independent can start from a very young age. A child who is
independent will feel more confident and they will be in touch with
their feelings and environment around them. Besides that, this
episode, will also discuss the issue of children who sleep with
their parents and cannot sleep alone.
Mrs.Azlili's daughter Nureen, who is 4 years old has problems with doing her daily chores. These are some tips offered by Puan Safiyyah for Mrs.Azlili :
- To prepare a daily schedule for the child. It would be great if the child can participate in the preparation
of their schedule.
- When the child does his or her chores well, it is always best that parents acknowledge and reward
their child.
On the other hand, here are some tips for parents who face problems with getting their child to sleep on their own :
- Try to make the child's bedroom the same as the parent's bedroom. For example if the child is used to sleeping on a mattress in the parent's room, then there should have the same kind of mattress in the child's room as well.
- Try and make the child's room smell like the parent's room. This can be done by hanging the parent's clothes in the child's room.
- Let the child decide on how they would like to decorate their room.
- Have some fun activities with the child in their room during the day.
- Try not to scold children in their room. This will make them feel comfortable in their own room.
In this episode, we learn that parents should find the right time and technique to bring changes to their
children. For further information, please log onto upk@medik.ukm.my, Psychology Unit, UKM.
