In episode 4, we will be with Mrs. Azlina who is Clinical
Psychology Expert (UKM) whom discussed about
temperament issue (anger/tantrum) among children.
According to Mrs. Azlina, it is normal for children below
6 years to have temper tantrum. This a way for them to
express their feelings.

Some factors which contribute to this behavior among
children:

  1. Personality– Some children are very sensitive and
    emotional.
  2. Stress – it is also triggered when the child is hungry, overly tired or is hot
(sometimes they are also influenced when a parent displays symptoms of stress).

Some SMART Immune Tips that were given to Mrs. Zaireen are :

  • Ensure that the child understands what the ‘Cooling Down Chair’ is.
  • Parents should be consistent and firm during ‘Cooling Down Chair’ exercise.
  • Finally, do praise them when they have ‘cooled’ down from a tantrum.

The following were some SMART Immune Tips Mrs. Azlina offered to Mrs. Marazra :

  • Provide a room for your child, to ‘cool down’ in when they have a temper tantrum. Parents should keep an eye on their  child while in this room,  to ensure they do not harm themselve.
  • Parents should be firm and consistent until their child understands and is able to control their outburst.
  • Parents should look at their child in the eye when talking to them, in order to get their full attention.

At the end of the episode, Mrs. Azlina advised that parents to spend  half an hour everyday with their child when they arrive home from work. This time is important, as it is at this moment  that children are the most excited and eager to tell their parents about their day. It is important for parents to be there when their child needs them most.
