Episode 3: Dyslexia
In this episode, we will discuss a major problem among
children, dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning disability that
manifests primarily as a difficulty with language, particularly
in reading and spelling. Dyslexia also results from
differences in how the brain processes written or spoken
language. Although dyslexia is thought to be as a result of
a neurological impairement, it is not an intellectual disability.
In this episode, we listened to the advice from the President
of the Dyslexia association W.P., Puan Sariah Amirin.
According to Puan Sariah one of the effective ways to help
a dyslexic child is by teaching the child to use a 3
dimensional object because a dyslexic child is more receptive
to visual stimulus.

We brought Pn Sariah to meet Bryan, a dyslexic child, whose parents Mr and Mrs Soo have been trying to find ways to improve his situation.

Smart Immune tips: Puan Sariah suggested that Mr and Mrs Soo should :

  • Use alphabets to differentiate objects
  • Teaching words in the same phonics group. Only changing first alphabet.
  • Encouraging games such as writing on sand to enhance the stimulation of senses.

Other Smart Immune tips: Norlinda Masood, a Trainer from the Dyslexia Association W.P. advised Pn Zarina and Rashdan to:

  • Start by teaching their child, Rashdan, to read 2 syllable words (i.e: 'baby,' 'ballon') and then expand to 3 syllable words.
  • To stimulate the mind and build confidence in the child, parents can encourage their child to jump on a trampoline.

Last but not least, dyslexia is now a more common problem among many children, but it is usually misunderstood by many parents. For parents who suspect their child is dyslexic, they can always
get help from the Dyslexia Association W.P. For further enquirers, please log onto www.fitzprog.com.au/dyslexia.swk.com.
